Pronounced 'Zhu', this is the Chinese symbol for bamboo, calligraphed by Natalie using a brush. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant in the world and is catergoried as woody perennial grass family. Their growth rate is about 60cm a day. Bamboo provides essential elements for food and housing in China. With the modern technology bamboo is widely used in textile industries. Bamboo is widely and readily available in China, whilst cotton production is heavily labour intensive. To grow cotton, farmers have to use tons of pesticides each year. Pesticides usually cost much more than what they get from selling cotton. I personally know about this as my grandmother used to live in a village where the villagers were forced on to grow cotton. During the summer holidays, I used to visit her in the north and watched the villagers picking cotton in the cotton fields. It was a hard life. I lived in the southern China with my parents where bamboo wildly grows. By cutting down bamboo, it's to encourage new growth. I do suggest people to use more bamboo products rather than cotton products. I will introduce more bamboo products in due course. - by Natalie
